I'm from the U.S. One couple relied on a system that is similar here that is supposed to warn you/update on any wildfires close to you. Look at the history of such systems in the U.S. Those seldom work and outright fail. Two examples are the Camp Fire in Paradise CA and the Marshall Fire in Colorado. Cal Fire systems cratered and in Marshall, for the most part it didn't function at all. Utter confusion with the Waldo Canyon Fire of 2012. One city council member in Paradise summed it up best. It's up to YOU to decide when it's time to go!

Also remember a defendable house means a house not surrounded by shrubs and bushes along with trees

I remember this I was about 10 years old when this was happening I remember when upper ferntree gully caught on fire being only a kilometre away from the station and the whole sky was black with the fires near upwey and birds land I thought we would loose our home, all the roads and Burwood highway had been closed, absolutely terrifying for our family and those around us all

Something that I think this documentary captures so well is the utter confusion of the day. I lived on the edge of Broadford near where the Kilmore east fire started and everything happened so quickly. Early on we got a call from a friend out fighting the fires "I've just gone through wandong and they have no idea what's coming. They're on they're rooves in shorts and sandals with a garden hose thinking they can stop what's coming, its a monster" after what felt like no time the fire was in kinglake like 50-60 km away Then in the afternoon we had the wind change and all of a sudden the fires moving for us. Fortunately my old man was all over it and we'd been preparing for hours but I remember thinking Kinglake's on fire. How can the same fire be burning Kinglake and threatening Broadford? half the state would have to be on fire. and then there was Marysville. I don't think I heard about tragedy at Marysville till the Sunday afternoon. The documentary is 100% right. To this day I don't know how no-one knew but the news just never got out. I did get one little smile watching this though because I remember the first thing I heard of Marysville was that *the whole town was gone, every building. But they saved the pub!*

The remastered Black Saturday documentary is a real eye opener, probably the best documentary on an Australian fire.

As someone who bought the DVD boxset a while back, I didn't spend the dosh on Janus at the ABC Shop at the time and regret it, becuase now finding Janus on DVD is like finding a unicorn. I think it is in some libraries here and there. How did you get access to the HDR/film format? Do you know some of the producers of the show, or is the series able to be purchased digitally now?The only digital version I saw around was a DVD-Rip that was in old Xvid format. Nobody ever shared Janus, though, which is a shame. UPDATE: ABC have recently put it back on iView, hasn't been on there for almost 12 years! They might not have the rights to Janus, though, which is a shame. The quality isn't the best, though - a lot of video noise in the picture.

those cfa fire fighters need to be paid for what they put their lives through they do worse fires than what the paid mfb fire fighters do the cfa have angels walking beside them they risk everything please bless these people i have just finished watching this very very sad story in 2024 i wonder if they caught the culprit that started this nightmare i can onley hope may the victims of the fire rest in peace
